Bio
Nepo is a British painter born in Staffordshire, currently splitting time between London and Tokyo. With Trinidadian roots that remain largely unexplored, Nepo grapples with feelings of cultural displacement, which profoundly inform his artistic practice.
Having lived in diverse cultural landscapes, Nepo draws inspiration from a vibrant tapestry of influences, exploring themes of identity and belonging. His work is characterised by the use of oil paints and found objects, creating layered compositions that challenge conventional artistic norms.
Nepo actively engages with historical narratives, sourcing artifacts from colonial archives and Trinidadian digital materials. This process allows for a dialogue between the past and present, where appropriation and concealment serve to re-order cultural identities.
Through his art, Nepo aims to provoke thought and inspire discourse on the complexities of identity in contemporary society. His work has been exhibited in various venues including the National Gallery in London, reflecting a commitment to pushing the boundaries of how traditional painting is viewed while honouring a rich genealogical heritage.
